Listening is not agreeing

Maya says, “I want to finish one small step before passing the tablet.” Nico replies, “You want to keep it forever!” Are they still discussing the same proposal?

Let's discover together

  1. 1

A paraphrase puts another person’s idea in different words while preserving its meaning. Replacing “one small step” with “forever” creates an easier target but changes the proposal.

  2. 2

We can say, “I understood that you want to finish a step before switching. Is that right?” This lets Maya correct the summary. We do not guess her intention or pretend to speak for her.

  3. 3

After understanding, we can still disagree: “How can we avoid a very long wait if the step takes longer?” The objection asks about a limit of the rule without insulting the person.

  4. 4

In this practice, we will listen, summarize, check and then offer a reason or question. This is a starting aid, not a compulsory formula for every conversation. Careful listening does not require agreement or staying in an offensive conversation.

YOUR MISSION

Restate a proposal without exaggerating it and organize a reply that first checks understanding.

Listening is not agreeing

Arrange this listening guide. Use the arrows; no dragging is needed.
  1. Ask how to limit waiting, responding to the confirmed idea
  2. Listen to Maya’s full proposal
  3. Ask whether the summary is right and listen to the correction
  4. Summarize: finish a small step before switching
Build your answers and check when you are ready.
A moment to understand

Which reply examines Maya’s actual proposal?

I need a hint

Maya spoke about a step, not endless use. Ask about that limit.

Take it with you

Write a four-line dialogue between invented characters: proposal, faithful summary, confirmation or correction, and a respectful question. Read both voices. Did either become a caricature?
