Questions that open paths · Lesson 03 / 06

A good reason can face questions

Nico proposes turns of equal length. “It is fair because it is fair,” he says. Does repeating the conclusion explain anything? Let us look for reasons and test the word “always.”

Let's discover together

  1. 1

A reason supports a conclusion. “Equal turns make waiting more predictable” explains an advantage of the proposal. It does not settle the whole discussion, but it gives the group something concrete to examine.

  2. 2

“The rule is fair because it is fair” circles back to its starting point. “A famous person likes it” also does not explain, by itself, why the rule serves the people in this club.

  3. 3

Now test: “The same amount of time always gives the same opportunity to create.” In a story, one program takes four minutes to open and another opens immediately. Five-minute turns leave different amounts of time to create. This case challenges “always.”

  4. 4

A counterexample that truly contradicts a rule is enough to defeat an “always” claim. It does not prove that equal turns never help. A more careful revision could separate setup time from creation time.

YOUR MISSION

Recognize a relevant reason and use a counterexample to limit a general claim.

What does the example of the programs let us revise?

I need a hint

Avoid replacing one generalization with another. A real limit calls for a more precise conclusion.

Take it with you

Complete in your workbook: “I propose ___ because ___.” Write a case that would challenge your proposal and a more careful version of it. Use an invented club rule without personal data.
