Internet, web and networks I · Lesson 06 / 10

Status: clues, not verdicts

200 and 404 are different messages. Neither tells the whole story alone.

Let's discover together

  1. 1

Generally, 2xx indicates success, 3xx redirection or related actions, 4xx request or resource-access issues and 5xx server problems. The family helps, but the code and context matter.

  2. 2

200 reports success for the operation; it does not guarantee truthful text. 404 says the resource representation was not found or not disclosed; it does not mean the entire internet failed.

  3. 3

In the lab, 405 means a known method is not allowed for that resource; Allow lists accepted methods. 503 represents temporary unavailability. Do not endlessly repeat requests to force a response.

  4. 4

DNS failure, refused connections and certificate errors can prevent an HTTP response. Record no status when no code was observed. 304, used for cache revalidation, carries no new body; you will meet it again later.

YOUR MISSION

Interpret statuses and distinguish an HTTP response from an earlier failure.

Now it's your turn

Discovery workshop

Observe before concluding

Trial A received 404. Trial B stopped before any HTTP response.
Build your answers and check when you are ready.
A moment to understand

Does 404 require concluding the whole network stopped?

I need a hint

Return to the evidence: what was observed and what is still unknown?

Loading your journey…

Take it with you

Make a table of 200, 404, 405, 503 and no response. For each, record a possible observation and a premature conclusion.
