HTTP: a conversation with rules

Open the envelope of a request without confusing it with a command to run.

Let's discover together

  1. 1

In a textual HTTP/1.1 representation, GET /hello HTTP/1.1 starts a request. GET requests a representation of the resource. Host identifies the target host; headers carry metadata. Do not paste this line alone into the system terminal.

  2. 2

The response includes a status, headers and, where applicable, a body. Content-Type describes the content type, such as text/plain or application/json. A body may be text, an image or other bytes; it is not always HTML.

  3. 3

HEAD requests headers corresponding to GET without sending the response body. POST requests data processing according to the resource rules. POST does not mean encryption; HTTPS is a separate aspect.

  4. 4

HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 retain methods, statuses and headers but use different transport formats. The teaching envelopes here are not literal captures of every version.

YOUR MISSION

Identify method, target, headers and body.

Now it's your turn

Discovery workshop

Observe before concluding

Request: HEAD /hello. Observed response: 200, Content-Type: text/plain, no body.
Build your answers and check when you are ready.
A moment to understand

Does changing GET to POST encrypt the connection?
