Computational thinking: from idea to plan · Lesson 02 / 07

The essentials fit in a model

Orders have drawings and invented names. To decide how many kits to assemble and whether they need rain protection, which information actually matters?

Let's discover together

  1. 1

A model represents part of a situation. Abstraction means keeping what matters for the goal and deliberately leaving other details out.

  2. 2

Our model uses the order count and rain: yes or no. Real names and drawing colors are not needed for this decision. In another task, such as sorting by color, color would matter.

  3. 3

Orders repeat the same structure: quantity and weather condition. Recognizing this pattern lets us write a rule for more than one order.

  4. 4

Every model has limits. Here we assume enough materials and one weather condition per scenario. Real stock limits and weather changes would require more information.

YOUR MISSION

Choose relevant data for a goal and recognize a repeating structure.

The essentials fit in a model

A: 1 order, no rain, blue drawing. B: 3 orders, rain, green drawing. The goal is to assemble the right quantity and protect only when it rains.

A moment to understand

When can we leave information out of the model?

I need a hint

Ask: would changing this detail change the decision? The answer depends on the goal.

Take it with you

Draw two fictional order cards using only quantity and rain. Then invent a change of goal that makes another piece of information necessary.
