Break it down to get started

“Prepare the presentation” feels huge to Dani. Separating it into finding an example, drawing and rehearsing reveals a sequence and makes effort easier to estimate.

Let's discover together

  1. 1

A step needs to be clear enough to try. “Do everything” becomes “choose an example” and “draw that example.” Some steps depend on others: rehearsing an explanation needs something to explain.

  2. 2

Dani estimates: choosing, 5 minutes; drawing, 10; rehearsing, 5. The total is 20 minutes, before breaks and interruptions. These numbers belong to this example; they are not a speed rule for learners.

  3. 3

If drawing takes longer, Dani compares the prediction with what happened and adjusts the plan. Needing more time is not a character flaw. Dani can reduce the scope, split sessions or ask for support.

A moment to understand

What does an estimate help us do?

I need a hint

Estimates are predictions for a situation. Comparing them with the attempt informs the next plan; it does not measure a person’s worth.

Take it with you

Divide a fictional presentation into three steps. Identify one dependency and a way to reduce the task if the available time changes.
