Two rules, one table

The square compares two lantern plans. A uses 12 preparation tokens and 2 per lantern. B uses 4 per lantern, with no preparation charge. Tokens are invented learning resources.

Let's discover together

  1. 1

    Call the number of lanterns n. It is a number that can change. The rules are A = 12 + 2 × n and B = 4 × n, with results in tokens.

  2. 2

    For n = 3: A = 18 and B = 12. For n = 6: A = 24 and B = 24. For n = 8: A = 28 and B = 32. A table helps compare the same quantity.

  3. 3

In B, doubling n doubles the tokens. In A, the preparation of 12 remains: doubling n does not double the total. A grows regularly but is not directly proportional to n.

  4. 4

The rules are a model, not a law for every real square. We do not include transport, time or other needs here. Record these limits.

Compare the same quantity

No reduction: A = 12 + 2 × n; B = 4 × n.

Take it with you

Make a table for n = 0, 3, 6 and 8. Explain what 12 in A represents when n = 0 under this rule.
