Rust and Rullst on macOS: from zero · Lesson 02 / 06

The bridge to compiling on Mac

Before the first program, let’s check the bridge between Rust and the operating system.

Let's discover together

  1. 1

Rust needs native tools to link program parts. On Mac, Apple’s Command Line Tools provide a C compiler, linker and SDK.

  2. 2

In Terminal, run xcode-select --install and complete Apple’s official dialog. If already installed, read the message and check system updates; do not remove a working installation.

  3. 3

Then run xcode-select -p. A tools path indicates their installation location. An editor such as VS Code helps write code; it does not replace these compilation tools.

Practice scenario: the editor opens, but compilation reports a missing linker. The editor’s appearance does not prove native tools are installed.
