A network connects devices that exchange data using shared rules called protocols. The internet joins many independently managed networks; it is not one central computer.

Wi-Fi connects your device to a nearby network. That network can work without internet access. A Wi-Fi symbol does not prove a distant page will respond.

The web consists of resources accessed through URLs, usually with HTTP or HTTPS. The internet also carries other services. Browser and internet are not synonyms; a local page can open without an external connection.

Data travels in units called packets. Routers forward packets between networks. Cables, radio, providers and equipment all play a part; a failure need not be in the site or your device.
