Errors that help you investigate

An error message is a clue. Find out whether the tool is missing, the file is elsewhere or a line needs correction.

Learning paths12 min

Let's discover together

  1. 1

If python is not found, reopen the terminal and check the official aliases and PATH guide. If an existing installation works with py, use py --version and replace python with py in this course’s commands. The old py may not accept install; pymanager is the new manager’s specific name. Do not remove installations or replace the whole PATH by trial and error.

  2. 2

If you see can't open file or No such file, Python may be working but unable to find hello.py. Use Get-Location and Get-ChildItem; check the folder, exact name and extension. hello.py.txt does not match hello.py. Quote paths containing spaces.

  3. 3

The error simulation is missing a closing parenthesis; the editor code shows the corrected version. SyntaxError means Python could not parse the structure. Read the indicated line and the previous one: the marker may show where the problem was noticed, not where it began.

  4. 4

If IndentationError appears, check leading spaces. In the next lesson, lines inside def use four spaces. Avoid mixing tabs and spaces. For help, share a small example and the message, removing personal paths and secrets.

From the browser to your computer

This page’s predictions use prepared examples. To practise for real, download the activity, extract it into a new folder and follow README.md one step at a time. Rullst Academy does not install or run Python on your computer.

Commands in your system’s terminal

python hello.py

Code to save in the editor

The Python lines below belong in the file. Terminal commands are in the preceding panel. Do not copy >>>, line numbers or Markdown fences.

My files and GitHub

In the first two lessons, the editor keeps .md notes. Afterwards it keeps .py code. Download your edits to take them to another device; the ZIP contains starter material. GitHub publishing is optional and sends one file per operation, without sending your Python environment.

YOUR MISSION

Investigate one problem at a time without reinstalling everything.

Now it's your turn

Prepare, observe and explain

Both scenarios are Python snippets, not terminal commands. The first is deliberately incomplete; we show only the SyntaxError class because messages and paths vary. The second has the corrected parenthesis and can produce output.
Mini experiment

Learning simulation: compare cards and check your predictions. The browser is not compiling Rust or starting a server.

A moment to understand

What is a good first step when an error appears?

I need a hint

Compare the tools, the file and the result. You do not need to guess.

Loading your journey…

Take it with you

In a practice copy of hello.py, remove a parenthesis, save and observe the error. Restore it and run again. Explain how you know the file was found despite the syntax error.

At your own pace

My files and GitHub

Every lesson can become your own record: code, notes or a practice plan. Saving a file to GitHub is optional and does not change your XP.
