Does the lower total fit the plan?

A plan can use fewer tokens than another and still exceed the available limit. In the square, we need to distinguish “lower” from “possible”.

Let's discover together

  1. 1

    Keep A = 12 + 2 × n and B = 4 × n. For five lanterns, A uses 22 tokens and B uses 20. With 21 tokens available, only B fits.

  2. 2

After choosing B, 21 − 20 = 1 token remains. A total equal to the limit also fits: the remainder would be zero, not a failure.

  3. 3

For eight lanterns, A uses 28 and B uses 32. With a limit of 20 tokens, neither fits, even though A is lower. “Neither” is a valid conclusion.

  4. 4

We can revise the quantity or resources, but should not secretly change numbers to justify a preference. Record the new assumption and recalculate.

YOUR MISSION

Compare alternatives under a constraint and explain when neither works.

Now it's your turn

Discovery workshop

Two different decisions

Scenario 1: 5 lanterns, limit 21. Scenario 2: 8 lanterns, limit 20. No reduction in either.
Build your answers and check when you are ready.
A moment to understand

The lower total exceeded the limit. What should we do?

I need a hint

Compare each total with the limit, not only one plan with the other.
