Rust and Rullst on macOS: from zero · Lesson 05 / 06

Rullst: two complementary parts

The CLI helps create and manage projects. The Rullst library becomes a dependency of each application.

Let's discover together

  1. 1

Check rustc --version: Rullst 12.1 requires Rust 1.96 or later. If using rustup and needing an updated stable, run rustup update stable; then check rustup show and the active version in the project folder.

  2. 2

As your regular user, run cargo install cargo-rullst --version 12.1.0 --locked. The official package is named cargo-rullst. Installation downloads and compiles dependencies; it may take several minutes and need disk space. Wait for the result and read any native-tool errors.

  3. 3

Check cargo rullst --version and cargo rullst --help. This path pins 12.1.0 for reproducibility. Installing the CLI does not change existing projects’ Cargo.toml; a project’s Rullst dependency is a separate choice. Official binaries by system are also in the release with verification instructions.

YOUR MISSION

Distinguish the CLI package from the dependency recorded in the project.

Discovery workshop

Rullst: two complementary parts

Lumi’s terminal shows CLI 12.1.0, but an older project’s Cargo.toml still declares Rullst 12.0.0. These are versions of different components.

A moment to understand

Does updating the CLI automatically migrate every project?

I need a hint

An installed program and an application’s code have separate lifecycles.
