Semantic HTML and accessibility · Lesson 04 / 10

Text that helps people participate

Workshop instructions should remain clear when read aloud.

Let's discover together

  1. 1

Use p for paragraphs. An unordered materials list uses ul and li; assembly steps use ol and li. Do not write numbers and line breaks merely to imitate a list.

  2. 2

Each li belongs inside a list. Close elements in the correct order; a p should not wrap a list. A browser may repair malformed HTML when building the DOM, so acceptable appearance does not prove correct markup.

  3. 3

Strong marks importance and em marks emphasis; they are more than bold and italic commands. Write short, specific instructions. “Use paper already used on one side” helps more than “do it correctly”.

  4. 4

To show <p> as text, write &lt;p&gt;. For a literal & in examples, use &amp;. Create separate materials and steps, and read them without relying on color, position or icons.

HTML workshop: write, observe, review

Edit HTML in “My files and GitHub” and update the preview. It uses study elements and reading styles: scripts, custom CSS and external navigation are disabled. Only the kit’s route.svg is shown as an image.

Go to my HTML

These simple checks are neither complete HTML validation nor a WCAG audit. Review content, keyboard, zoom and assistive technologies; record what you have not tested.

✦
YOUR MISSION

Represent sequences, collections and emphasis with appropriate HTML.

Now it's your turn

Discovery workshop

Read, predict, try

Materials: paper and pencil. Steps: draw, test, revise — in that order.
Build your answers and check when you are ready.
A moment to understand

Why can a page appear despite incorrect HTML?

I need a hint

Compare the intent with the meaning of the elements; appearance alone does not demonstrate accessibility.

Loading your journey…

Take it with you

Write a three-step activity another person can follow. Ask them to explain one instruction in their own words and revise an ambiguous part.

At your own pace

My files and GitHub

Every lesson can become your own record: code, notes or a practice plan. Saving a file to GitHub is optional and does not change your XP.
