Git: every change counts · Lesson 02 / 10

One folder, one repository

Let us prepare an isolated workshop and use a fictional study identity for commits.

Let's discover together

  1. 1

In a study folder outside other repositories, create oficina-git and enter it. If the name exists, choose a new name. Do not run examples in an important project repository.

  2. 2

git init -b main creates .git metadata and chooses main as the initial name. Course commands require Git 2.28 or later; use a maintained system version. .git is repository metadata, not a file to edit manually.

  3. 3

git config --local affects only this workshop. user.name and user.email are authorship metadata, not login or password. The fictional identity below avoids personal data in the exercise. --global would affect other repositories for the user.

  4. 4

For real GitHub commits, first choose your public name and the verified or noreply address supplied by your account. Changing configuration later does not rewrite old authorship. For now, stay in the local lab.

Your change laboratory

This page’s experiments show prepared outputs. To run real commands, use a new practice folder on your computer and the guide included in “Download activity”. Read the instructions before each command.

My files and GitHub

The editor below saves your Markdown notes in this browser. Download a copy to take them to another device. Sending that file to GitHub does not send your computer’s .git history.

FROM LESSON TO PRACTICE

A guide to follow at your pace

Read the steps before using the reference below. Commands run in the indicated system’s terminal; signup happens on the official site. Rullst Academy exercises are practice and do not verify your installation or external account.

mkdir oficina-git
cd oficina-git
git init -b main
git config --local user.name "Local Learner"
git config --local user.email "learner@example.test"
git status

✦
YOUR MISSION

Create a repository and configure identity only within it.

Now it's your turn

Discovery workshop

Read the state, choose the next step

The new folder already received git init -b main and local configuration for Local Learner. We have not made commits yet. One scenario reads the branch; the other reads the author name. Outputs are prepared; this page does not run Git.
Mini experiment

Learning simulation: compare cards and check your predictions. The browser is not compiling Rust or starting a server.

git branch --show-current
Build your answers and check when you are ready.
A moment to understand

Which setting is limited to the current workshop?

I need a hint

Local scope belongs to the repository, leaving other projects unchanged.

Loading your journey…

Take it with you

Create the workshop and run git config --local --get user.email. Check scope with git config --show-origin --get user.name. Record only the configuration origin, without publishing personal paths.

At your own pace

My files and GitHub

Every lesson can become your own record: code, notes or a practice plan. Saving a file to GitHub is optional and does not change your XP.
