Checks that help without overpromising

Automated tests help when we know what they measure and which change they check.

Let's discover together

  1. 1

Continuous integration runs checks for configured events. The kit contains workflow/checks.yml.example for study: pull_request targeting main and push to main run Python tests. Downloading it activates nothing; understand the steps first.

  2. 2

The template uses a GitHub-hosted runner, timeout and contents: read permission. Checkout is pinned to a commit of an official action and does not persist credentials. Commands do not use PR titles or text as scripts, receive no secrets and publish no files.

  3. 3

Read the check name, run, revision and logs. An old result or a job that skipped the expected test is not evidence for the change. Passing tests cover their cases; they do not prove no defects, full accessibility or permission to merge.

  4. 4

README’s optional step copies the template to .github/workflows/checks.yml in your practice repository. Review policies, availability and usage limits first. Avoid untrusted proposals on personal runners or combining fork code with privileged credentials; this course does not need pull_request_target.

One change, two roles

Download the kit and follow LAB.md in a new folder. Commands here are reading references; the site does not execute them. Use Git Bash on Windows and a terminal on macOS/Ubuntu. Earlier tracks cover Git and Python setup.

Edit, download and send your Markdown notebook to GitHub with confirmation. It does not run Git or open pull requests. The kit is the starter; save edits separately.

YOUR MISSION

Read a small workflow and distinguish checks, coverage and merge permission.

Now it's your turn

Discovery workshop

A decision with evidence

The check passed on commit A, but the proposal now contains B. The job has contents: read.
Build your answers and check when you are ready.
A moment to understand

How should green on A be interpreted?

I need a hint

Compare the agreement with the diff and evidence for the current commit.

Take it with you

Explain each workflow block without enabling it. Run the test command locally and record uncovered cases.

My files and GitHub

Every lesson can become your own record: code, notes or a practice plan. Saving a file to GitHub is optional and does not change your XP.
